[Merlin's voice, slightly muffled because of the distance at first, is much clearer when he speaks again
after a few seconds, though he sounds anything but cheerful. If anything, he sounds sullen.]

It's Merlin. Sorry I missed you. I'm probably at the hospital or... [here, he pauses,
then continues like the words are being dragged out of him in the most painful manner possible.] Or being useful for my amazingly skilled, patient, and forgiving master instead of
dallying about and picking flowers like the girl's petticoat I usually am.

[A pained moment of silence.]

Well, I thought as much, that's why I came to ask if you knew.

And he insists it's because of all the things he did. When I asked him what that was, he just kept telling me to read his books. He said what didn't he do! It was terribly strange. Miss Hermione and Harry seemed to know him, perhaps I should ask them.

Odd, that. If he's written books, he ought to know the deeds well.

Hermione might know of him, but Harry is...he's not here any longer, Alice.

No... no he... people are disappearing but it's only temporary. People come back, Harry will come back, Merlin. We don't know he's gone. Right now things... things are so very wrong but he's here... I-I'm sure of it.

[Sorrow fills him, even as Merlin can't bring himself to contradict her. Some part of him had stopped believing as soon as he'd woken up and seen Morgana had disappeared, too.

If he can't believe, at least someone still can.]

So...you've been talking to this Lockhart? I suppose it wouldn't hurt to meet him.

[She accepts the change of topic with gratitude.]

Well, not much, but I thought it couldn't hurt to have tea all together. We should all know one another, we all have to help one another.

Tea sounds...great. [And he's being totally honest this time. After watching his friends get attacked by the giants and then coming home to see Asgard in panic again....had taken its toll.

A nice, quiet afternoon with Alice might be just what he needs.]

I got the impression he didn't think you anything except sharing a name.

[Merlin smiles a bit, shrugging.]

Well, I think it would be lovely for us to meet all together, all the same. I miss you.

What do you say, we do this after I come back? The group going to Ginnungagap is leaving soon, and I won't be around for some time.

Oh... I wouldn't call him a friend, Merlin. But well, maybe he can be. I'm not sure yet. [Having adult friends isn't exactly new to Alice, Lockhart just seems an... interesting sort and that makes Alice curious.]

I would love to see you when you come back. You can see how well your pets are doing. You know, Merlin, you have more animals than I do.

[He looks sheepish.] I seem to have collected a good number of them, haven't I? Though, honestly, Storm and Frewen were Arthur and Leon's doing.

You know, I also recall you adding to that number, Alice.

[Grinning as he teases her.]

I could add to it again, if you like? [She grins right back.] Not that I think you mind Alicia.

[He holds his hands up in mock surrender.]

No more. I think my new apartment would burst at the seams if I took in another pet.

Have you thought about a bigger place?

[The smile dims a bit.]

I moved into the new place because the old house I'd shared with the others was...too big for me. It felt empty.

I... I know the feeling. People... people keep leaving.

I wonder if it's because of...whatever's happening to this world. The flood, the other disasters, it can't all be a coincidence.

Whatever it is, the gods might not have as much control over who comes and goes any longer.

The world keeps getting worse, but no one knows how to help it.

What are we supposed to do, Merlin? If not even the gods have much control, anymore.

We hang on and make the best of it.

[Said firmly, without hesitation.]

No matter how difficult it gets, there's always going to be people who need help. Arthur wouldn't want us to give up, would he? He'd keep fighting, until the end.

But what are we fighting! What is the point of fighting anything when it's the world doing it?

How do you fight a whole world, Merlin?

I don't know, Alice. Seems like we can't even predict what will happen next nowadays.

but I do know this--whatever does happen, you'll still have me to talk to, if you need someone. Just keep that in mind, I suppose.

Y-Yes.... you too. You can come to me, talk to me. Because we're friends.
