[Merlin's voice, slightly muffled because of the distance at first, is much clearer when he speaks again
after a few seconds, though he sounds anything but cheerful. If anything, he sounds sullen.]

It's Merlin. Sorry I missed you. I'm probably at the hospital or... [here, he pauses,
then continues like the words are being dragged out of him in the most painful manner possible.] Or being useful for my amazingly skilled, patient, and forgiving master instead of
dallying about and picking flowers like the girl's petticoat I usually am.

[A pained moment of silence.]

No... no he... people are disappearing but it's only temporary. People come back, Harry will come back, Merlin. We don't know he's gone. Right now things... things are so very wrong but he's here... I-I'm sure of it.

No more. I think my new apartment would burst at the seams if I took in another pet.

I moved into the new place because the old house I'd shared with the others was...too big for me. It felt empty.

I... I know the feeling. People... people keep leaving.

I wonder if it's because of...whatever's happening to this world. The flood, the other disasters, it can't all be a coincidence.

Whatever it is, the gods might not have as much control over who comes and goes any longer.

The world keeps getting worse, but no one knows how to help it.

What are we supposed to do, Merlin? If not even the gods have much control, anymore.

We hang on and make the best of it.

No matter how difficult it gets, there's always going to be people who need help. Arthur wouldn't want us to give up, would he? He'd keep fighting, until the end.

But what are we fighting! What is the point of fighting anything when it's the world doing it?

I don't know, Alice. Seems like we can't even predict what will happen next nowadays.

but I do know this--whatever does happen, you'll still have me to talk to, if you need someone. Just keep that in mind, I suppose.
